Yesterday I slept in for  the first time all summer and when I woke up I felt rested and perky and ready for a picnic with my favorite brown eyed boy. I tied my hair up in unwashed pig tails and topped it off with a red bandana, threw on cutoff shorts and ying yang flip flops and spent at least twenty minutes in the kitchen trying to create the King of all sandwiches. when i finally unveiled my delicious creation and set the Playmate Cooler aside you bit into it and asked me if my step dad made it. I licked melted chocolate off of my fingers and looked at your sun burnt face across from mine at the rickety old picnic table. Yellow fields stretched out behind you and all I wanted to do was grab your hand and go on an adventure. Together we walked down to the creek and i made you hold my shoes while I tip toed barefoot into the muddy water. I was looking for crawl dads under moss covered rocks but all I found was an eight year old girl in a blue bikini who was afraid of crickets and had just lost a tooth. She let me into her little second grade world like I was a sister or cousin she hadn’t seen in a while and I wondered if her mother ever told her not to talk to strangers. But all her innocence made me smile so we both gasped when her brother grabbed a snake out of the water and I waved her goodbye when my feet started to hurt and I wanted to be alone with you. After you helped me climb back up to the trail you told me that little girl talked just like me- random and friendly and totally unaware that the words coming out of her mouth might leave people shocked or confused. Innocent. Careless. Maybe a little crazy too. I think we need more 8 year olds in this world.

I begged you to rent a paddle boat but you were hot and tired and I could tell that our adventure was coming to an end. So we talked about our favorite seasons and sweated in your car all the way back to my house. We played basketball on an abandoned court in my neighborhood and ended the night eating cheese coneys and drinking your Monster-Float concoction. Energy drink and Ice cream just don’t mix but you said it tasted like sweet tarts and drank the whole thing. Just another reason why I love you. We are leaving for Texas tommorow and I know they are promising hurricanes and rainy days but my forecast is full of cowboy hats and mexican dinners and homegrown melons and new plane tickets for me to scrapbook.
